Cardboard Printing

  1. Draw a picture. This picture is a free choice subject matter. By “Free Choice” I mean no words, designs, patterns, logos, characters, sunsets, cell phones, or ipods. It must have a subject matter with a background and a focal point. It must fill the page and should be from a photograph.
  2. Take a large sheet of cardboard. Cut it to the size of your paper. Using a piece of carbon paper, trace the image onto the cardboard.
  3. Looking at your original drawing, decide what areas need to print solid “black”, which need to print solid “white” and which can be striped black and white. Those areas that are to be printed solid “black” just leave them alone. Those areas that are to be printed white, cut into the card board pulling off the first layer and the ribbing, leaving only the bottom layer. Those areas that are to be printed black and white striped, pull off the first layer of cardboard and leave the ribbing intact.
  4. Lacquer your cardboard sheets and let them dry for 24 hours.
  5. Select a color of ink that you want to use and ink your cardboard, running them through the printing press with a sheet of paper, twice the size of the cardboard.
